There is a place online where all the good horse players gather, it’s called a forum. On these forums they can openly discuss all their tips, hints, secrets and ideas. One of the topics that always comes up is whether or not you should bet on an unknown horse. Most people would have told you to avoid it, but there are some good reasons for betting on unknown horses. If I had known then I would have bet on one of them today.

There are two reasons. One reason is that you never know what the horse might be able to do. Maybe it has a great run in the fall, but maybe it gets sick or injured early and doesn’t run at all in the spring. This is how I’ve made my living for 25 years. Another reason is that while the unknown horse may not be the greatest bet, he or she could be a possible winner.

The other day I was talking to an old timer in the races, he said that he’d been handicapping for 15 years, and he’d never had a good win until lately. He said that when he first started out, he just picked the horse that looked best. Today he has three winners and two second places. That makes him luckier than most of the other bettors.
